End of Game

Updated Background: With Rubrum's decisive victory in the war engulfing Orience, taking control of all four Crystals, Tempus Finis commences. The skies turn blood red and Rursus are turned loose on the world, devastating everything in their path. Meanwhile, Pandaemonium rises from the sea, the temple of judgment to determine if Agito has been born into the world. Machina is compelled by the White Tiger Crystal to travel there himself and present himself as a candidate for Agito.

Meanwhile, Lord Zhuyu dies in the field whilst combating the Rursus, leaving Rubrum without any l'Cie to present as Agito. With this in mind, Lady Celestia of Concordia offers to bear Class Zero to the temple to represent Rubrum, despite this going against the will of her own Crystal and dooming herself to become a Cie'th. The class takes the opportunity to go, hoping to find a way to stop the Rursus from destroying the entire world. Yet the Vermilion Bird Crystal takes matters unto itself, first asking Class Zero to become its new l'Cie. When they decline the offer, it then turns to Rem who has collapsed to her fatal illness and was left behind in Akademia in a coma. She accepts, becoming the new Vermilion Bird l'Cie.

Machina is making his way through the trials of the temple, masked and under the full sway of the White Tiger, when he is confronted by Rem, who does not recognize him beyond being a White Tiger l'Cie. She demands he stand down and get out of her way because the Vermilion Bird wants Agito to be born of its power. His Focus is to stop the Vermilion Bird l'Cie, hers is to stop the White Tiger l'Cie. They end up engaged in heavy combat and Rem is stomping his ass. She flings him against a wall and flies in to finish him off, when he impales her on his swords. The impact of the blow of the wall knocks the mask off, breaking the White Tiger's control over his actions and he realizes he's just stabbed his best friend. As she's dying in his arms, they both sublimate, having completed their Foci.

While Machina and Rem are in crystal stasis, Class Zero trudges past them, horrified to find their classmates not only l'Cie, but sublimated and crystallized together. They are weary and unable to heal, but determined to press on to confront the Judge. The one to pass judgment on them as suitable for Agito is a hijacked Cid Aulstyne. He determines them to be lacking and slaughters the class wholesale. From the hallway in their stasis, Machina and Rem lend the class their powers so that they can see the task of defeating the Judge through to completion.

Some time later, Class Zero's Mother, Arecia comes to speak to Machina and Rem while they're sublimated. She wishes to know more about her children and their final decision of how to live and die. She is informed that the class made their choice to fight knowing that they would die and not be revived this time. The children of Class Zero love Arecia and yet do not wish to be revived. She decides then not to reset the cycle, opting instead to release Machina and Rem from their stasis and telling them they "will go forward in a world where death is not forgotten."

Machina makes his way back to Akademia with Rem to find all of Class Zero dead in the classroom, holding hands. It breaks him to not only find them thus, but to remember the dead for the first time, experiencing grief that's overwhelming.

Epilogue states that without the Crystals to give them direction, the people of Orience descended into a time of darkness and destruction. Machina became the voice entreating everyone to rebuild the world from ruination, drawing from nature and the land. In time, he becomes their leader and new beacon of hope.

Updated Personality: Less grump! (Okay, so all joking aside... )

In the face of his world being destroyed and epic regrets that the power he sought to save his friend killed her instead, Machina is a lot less rash and power hungry. He's been betrayed by that power. Instead, he takes up the mantle of savior and leader working with nature rather than fickle Crystals which are fading and vanish. His natural kindness returns to the forefront, though he's been damaged through his own mistakes, and from being used over and over again. But he chooses to move forward, to honor his fallen friends. He's still awkward, but he's got newfound determination to do right by others and to heal the world with hard work.

Updated Abilities:
To be honest, the game is a little sketchy about the timing of end-/post-game dynamics. It's said that the light of the Crystals faded and Arecia removed them from Orience but not when. So in the spirit of fairness (and some gee thanks SE), I'd presume that Machina's magic is still in place at this point in time. But, having sublimated and then released from stasis, he is no longer a branded l'Cie. So, the major changes would be a dial-back of previous abilities. No longer able to fly, teleport, magic juju machines/weaponry, no longer immortal and capable of aging once more. (The aging I'm 100% sure of because he dies at the age of 67, which means he's absolutely no longer a l'Cie.)

Other:
With this being the first time in his life that he can actually remember those who have died, to experience grief, and for it to be his entire class that he nurtured a grudge for so long, Machina will be a hurting mess for some time on return. It's less a note about his personality, per se, but more a note that he's got some major emotional baggage to unpack and slowly heal from upon returning to Empathias. Guilt, regret, hurt, anger, etc will all be prevalent for a season while he unpacks the tragic result of his Bad Life Decisions and learns how to live with grief.
